If you thought skinny jeans were destined to remain buried beneath a pile of wide-leg and barrel-leg denim, fashion has other plans. The once-beloved-turned-controversial silhouette has been working its way back into the style conversation. Miu Miu offered an early warning at its fall/winter 2024 show, where low-rise, leg-hugging jeans appeared on the runway after years of relaxed denim dominating the trend cycle.
Then, Michael Rider showcased slim cigarette jeans for his spring/summer 2026 collection for Celine, suggesting that fashion’s appetite for narrower denim was only growing. By fall 2026, that shift became impossible to ignore. At 7 For All Mankind, newly appointed creative director Nicola Brognano staged his runway debut as an unabashed ode to the mid-2000s, an era when skinny jeans were at their cultural peak.
Inspired by the off-duty style of Kate Moss, Sienna Miller, and Mary-Kate Olsen circa 2005 and 2006, the former Blumarine designer sent ultra-skinny jeans down the runway alongside skinny scarves, towering platforms, and other Y2K staples. Brognano was not alone. Alessandro Michele incorporated lace-trimmed skinny jeans into Valentino’s fall 2026 collection. At Gucci, meanwhile, Demna used his first runway show for the Italian house to make an even more emphatic case for the silhouette, pairing low-slung skinny jeans with everything from crop tops to fur-trimmed jackets.
Celebrities are following suit
Celebrities are following suit. Laura Harrier stepped out during Milan Fashion Week in black Gucci skinny jeans with split cuffs, while Olivia Wilde wore low-rise white skinnies for the I Want Your Sex premiere in Los Angeles. Olivia Rodrigo has embraced the slightly less extreme version of the trend, wearing narrow black cigarette jeans with heels in London. And then there’s Victoria Beckham, who hardly needs convincing: The longtime skinny jean devotee returned to one of her signature silhouettes this summer in fitted white denim.
Still, the 2026 skinny jeans comeback isn’t a revival of the stretch-heavy jeggings that defined their last reign. The new denim wave includes a wider variety of styles, from true skinnies to cigarette and slim-straight cuts: jeans that follow the line of the leg without needing to cling to every inch of it. Rigid denim, cleaner washes, and high rises also make the silhouette feel more modern than its 2010s predecessor.
